The
school was founded in 1871. In the first school year
there were 27 pupils. In 1889 it was raised to the level
of a lower grammar school by opening the third form
and two years later the fourth form was opened. On July
9th , 1896 the school was closed by the King Aleksandar
Obrenovic’s decret and it was opened again in 1912.

At
the begining of the First World War it stopped
working again. At the begining of 1919 the school
reopened with the fifth form for the first time.
From 1921-1929 it had six forms, but was closed
again becose it didn’t meet the criteria of
the educational authorities. |

It
was working continuously until the Second
World War having been one of the best
equipped schools in Serbia. Beside the
large library and teaching appliances
for different subjects, it had the so
called “pupils’ cinema” . There were many
activities at school. |

During
the occupation the school worked for 17
months with the teaching process similar
to a course. After the war, the school
was named “State High School of Vuk Karadzic”
. The building was rebuilt and the teaching
process has been improved since then. |

In
honour of its 100th anniversary, in 1971
the school was awarded The Medal of Merits
with gold star, and in 1977 it was awarded
“Vuk’s Reward for Special Contribution
to Development of Culture” in Serbia.
Being proud of its pupils who attended
the school, like Jovan Cvijic, a famous
geographer, and professors who have been
working hard during the years, the Grammar
School “Vuk Karadzic” in Loznica has significatly
marked the education in Serbia. |
